בימינו יש רק אלוהים אחד, אבל פעם, בעבר הרחוק, היו הרבה. כולם נעלמו בגלל אותו כשל אישיותי: הם רצו כל-כך שבני האדם יסגדו להם, שבמוקדם או במאוחר הם-עצמם נאלצו לסגוד חזרה לבני האדם. זו היתה הדרך היחידה שבה הם יכלו לחוש סיפוק כלשהו מעבודת האלילים שהופנתה אליהם — לייחס חשיבות מופרזת, מלאכותית, לכל מה שבני האדם אמרו ועשו וחשבו, ועל-ידי כך גם לעצמם בתור הנשוא העליון של הפעילות הזו. אבל העמדת הפנים לא יכלה להאריך ימים. כל אל, בתורו, נאלץ בסופו של דבר לראות את בני האדם כפי שהם באמת, ולהגיע למסקנה ההכרחית שאם יצורים כאלה אוהבים אותו, סימן שגם שוויו שלו לא גבוה במיוחד. וכל אל שעיכל את האמת הזו ירד בשקט, בבושה, מבמת ההיסטוריה והלך לבלי שוב.
Nowadays there is only one god, but once upon a time, in the distant past, there were many. They all disappeared because of the same personality defect: they were so keen on being worshipped by humans, that sooner or later they also had to worship humans in return. That was the only way they could feel any satisfaction in the idolatry aimed at them — to attach inflated, artificial importance to whatever humans said and did and thought, and by extension, to themselves as the ultimate object of all that activity. But the pretense could not last. Every god, in turn, eventually had to see humans as they actually were, and to reach the unavoidable conclusion that if such creatures loved him, then his own value wasn't too high either. And each god who realized this truth then quietly, ashamedly, stepped off the stage of history and left without ever coming back.
