Whoever learns a language in the usual ways — with some textbook, with or without a class and a teacher — is inducted by default into the normative social stratum within the culture to which the language belongs. He becomes one of those who go to restaurants with friends, make appointments, ask and tell the time, buy train tickets, ask girls on dates — in short, a cliché of a generic citizen in a consumer society, who is always busy with banal activities in which the does of the action is unimportant, because everyone can, and is supposed to, perform it identically.
