The logic behind social networking's mode of communication is that if you didn't share something, it never really happened to you. The need to share in order to stay in the game empties the notion of privacy and makes it emotionally meaningless. But since the existence of the individual depends on the existence of privacy, social networking actually promotes — true to its name — the inability to be a single person, with an independent reason to live in the world that is not measured according to the viewpoint of others.
