הסדר הכלכלי המודרני, שבו זהותו וערכו של אדם נקבעים על פי תפקידו היצרני — במה הוא עובד, כלומר מה הוא עושה למען תחזוקתה וקידומה של המכונה החברתית — נכון לא רק לזמן העבודה אלא גם לזמן הפנוי שמחוץ לה. מפגשים עם חברים מתנהלים לרוב סביב פעילות משותפת כלשהי, שלעתים קרובות כרוכה בהוצאה כספית. המשתתפים בפעילות צריכים למצוא בה עניין או להתיישר עם האחרים ולהיראות כאילו יש להם עניין כזה (ולהוכיח אותו בתשלום אם הוא נדרש לצורך ההשתתפות). העובדה הזאת הופכת את המפגש החברתי לדומה מאוד לפעילות מקצועית, שפתוחה רק למי שיש לו את ההכשרה והמעמד הארגוני המתאים. המחשבה לפגוש חבר סתם ככה, בלי לנצל את הזמן לפעילות מוגדרת ומקובלת-חברתית כלשהי שיש לה התחלה אמצע וסוף, נעשתה נדירה כמו המחשבה להסתכל על אדם חדש בלי לשאול, דבר ראשון, מה הוא עושה לפרנסתו.
The modern economic order, in which a person's identity and value are determined according to his productive role — what his job is, or in other words, what he does for the maintenance and development of the social machine — applies not only to the time spent at work but also to the free time outside the workplace. Meetings with friends usually take place around some joint activity, which frequently costs money. The participants must be interested in the activity, or align themselves with the others and appear to have such interest (and prove it by payment if it is required for participation). This fact makes the social gathering very similar to professional activity, which is only accessible to those who have the appropriate training and organizational status. The thought of meeting a friend just like that, without using the time for a specified, socially standardized activity that has a beginning, a middle, and an end, has become as rare as the thought of looking at a new person without asking, first of all, what he does for a living.
