The wish to create something that matches the prevailing tastes that surround the creator during his lifetime contradicts the primary motivation at the bottom of creativity: to leave behind something valuable that will live on after you, even when you yourself have long since been forgotten. A creative work that worships the present is tied to it with a short chain and cannot move away from it into the future. It becomes old the moment it is born, and is doomed to sink to the depths of oblivion along with the period it was created in.
