הגדרה אפשרית אחת של מבוגר היא: אדם שמשרת במלוא כוחותיו את תפקידו הביולוגי. השלב הזה מתחיל בבגרות המינית, שכופה את משימת ההמשכיות הגנטית על כל התודעה, ומגיע לשיאו בהולדת ילדים או בהימנעות ממנה — שתי אפשרויות שכל אחת מהן מרחיבה, על דרך החיוב או השלילה, את מרחב השליטה של אותה משימה מהתחום התודעתי גם לכל היבט של החיים המעשיים. כשלתפקיד הביולוגי אין אחיזה פעילה באדם, זה אומר שהוא עדיין לא, או כבר לא, מבוגר — אלא, בין אם הוא מודע לכך או לא, סתם יצור שהטבע אינו יכול לנצל, או במילים אחרות, אדם חופשי.
One possible definition of an adult is: a person who fully serves his biological function. This phase begins with puberty, which forces the mission of genetic continuity on the entire consciousness, and reaches its peak in childbirth or its avoidance — two alternatives that expand, whether by presence or by absence, that mission's zone of control from the territory of the mind to every aspect of practical life. When the biological function has no active hold over a person, it means that he is not yet, or no longer, an adult — but, whether he is aware of it or not, just a creature whom nature cannot exploit, or in other words, a free human.
