כלכלת תשומת הלב (attention economy) פונה לאותו צורך שאליו פונה הדת, אבל מחליפה את הרעיון הדתי המרכזי — גאולה על-טבעית, בחסדי ישות נעלה, ובעתיד הרחוק — ברעיון אחר, אבסורדי בהרבה: גאולה בנאלית, כאן ועכשיו, באמצעות מבטם של אנשים רגילים שלכודים בדיוק באותו מצב קיומי של האדם שהם אמורים לגאול.
Attention economy addresses the same need that is addressed by religion, but replaces the central religious idea — a salvation that is supernatural, through the grace of a superior being, and in the distant future — with something far more absurd: a salvation that is banal, here and now, through the glances of ordinary people who are trapped in the same existential condition as the person they are supposed to save.
