Children's songs, like psychoanalysis, are an invention that masquerades as a discovery: something that pretends to reflect a reality but actually fabricates it convincingly and authoritatively, and only by doing so, sometimes causes it to materialize. In Freud's case the fiction was about the crooked and hopeless soul of humans as a whole, whereas in the case of the composers and performers of children's songs, the fiction is about the stupidity, shallowness, and simplemindedness of humans when they are small.
