The obsession with being successful, which is so characteristic of our times, may actually originate from a fantasy of total immunity to criticism — based on the fact that whoever criticizes a successful person always appears to be motivated by envy, and the tendency is therefore to automatically dismiss his words. In this power equation, one who is not yet successful and criticizes an established winner is envious due to bitterness and failure; one who has succeeded and criticizes another winner is envious due to an unflattering comparison with himself; and an established winner who criticizes an up-and-coming winner is envious due to fear for his own status. This silencing effect of success, with which, as the saying goes, "you can't argue," is probably the real goal of any person who aspires to succeed: what he wants is not the positive opinion of others, but the erasure of their negative opinion. And perhaps, if he could achieve this goal by other means, he would never be interested in what other people think about him at all.
