כשמורכבות היא רק אסתטית אין לה שום יתרון על פשטות, והטענה כאילו היא בהכרח "גבוהה" ובעלת ערך רב יותר היא לא יותר מהתנשאות חסרת בסיס. הערך האמיתי היחיד של מורכבות הוא בהקשר של הבעת משמעות כלשהי, וגם אז, רק כשהנושא עצמו מורכב ודורש התייחסות מפורטת בהתאם. כל עוד מדובר במסר חושי טהור שלא מסוגל להעביר משמעות מוגדרת, כמו מנגינה או ציור מופשט, שיא התחכום שווה בדיוק כמו שיא השטחיות; ולעתים קרובות זה שוויו גם בדברים כמו סרט או ספר, כשהוא מכסה על היעדר משמעות במקום שבו היעדר כזה היה גורם, אחרת, למבנה כולו לקרוס.
When complexity is only aesthetic it has no advantage over simplicity, and the claim as if it is necessarily "higher" and more valuable is nothing more than unfounded pretentiousness. The only real value of complexity is in the context of expressing a certain meaning, and even then, only when the subject itself is complex and demands to be treated in corresponding detail. In a purely sensual message that cannot convey a concrete meaning, such as a melody or an abstract painting, the ultimate sophistication is worth just as much as the ultimate naivety; and often, this is also what it is worth in things like a movie or a book, when it conceals an absence of meaning where such an absence would otherwise cause the whole structure to collapse.
