סבל הוא הדלק שבלעדיו אי אפשר ליצור אמנות בעלת משמעות. השאלה החשובה היא האם צריכה להיות מהדלק הזה אספקה שוטפת כל עוד היוצר פעיל, כך שכל הפרעה בה תגרום לו לדעוך ולאבד רלוונטיות; או שדי בתדלוק אחד, בחוויית סבל מעצבת, כדי לתת לאדם באופן בלתי הפיך יכולת יצירה שתלווה אותו לשארית חייו.
Suffering is the fuel without which it becomes impossible to create meaningful art. The important question is whether there must be a regular supply of that fuel for as long as the creator is active, with any disruption causing him to decline and lose relevance; or whether one fueling, one formative experience of suffering, is sufficient to irreversibly give a person an ability to create that will remain with him for the rest of his life.
