מה גרוע יותר מהומור לא מצחיק? הומור שיודע ללחוץ על הכפתורים הנכונים: אמירה שכל מי ששומע אותה צוחק, פשוט כי הוא מבין שאין דרך מקובלת-חברתית להגיב אליה מלבד צחוק. הומור אמיתי מצחיק בדיוק מפני שלא יודעים איך להגיב אליו, איך לעכל אותו; הצחוק הוא רק הביטוי החיצוני, רק האדווה שנוצרת מפגיעת אבן המבוכה בפני המים של תפיסת המציאות השגרתית. אבל המאמץ להצחיק אנשים באופן צפוי מראש, שנפוץ כיום לא רק בבידור אלא גם בכל שיחה כמעט, הופך את הצחוק למטבע בכלכלת היחסים הבין-אישיים — אמצעי ליצירת הרמוניה ותחושת ביחד, ששאיפתו היא שהמים יהיו חלקים ודוממים וששום אבן לא תפר את שלוותם.
What is worse than unfunny humor? Humor that knows how to push the right buttons: an utterance that causes anyone who hears it to laugh, simply because the listener realizes there is no socially acceptable way to react to it other than laughing. True humor is funny precisely because people do not know how to react to it, how to swallow it; the laughter is just the outward expression, the ripple caused by the impact of the stone of embarrassment as it hits the surface of the water of conventional reality perception. But the effort to make people laugh in a predictable manner, which is nowadays common not only in entertainment but in virtually every conversation, turns laughter into a currency in the economy of interpersonal relations — a tool for creating harmony and a feeling of togetherness, whose goal is for the water to be smooth and still, with no stone ever disturbing its peace.
