One unintended consequence of political extremism directed against some status quo is the transformation of that status quo into a conscious and proud political viewpoint among those who previously followed it merely by default, without even knowing that other options were possible. For example, someone who uses standard Hebrew, and one day learns of the efforts of a pressure group to make the language gender-neutral, can suddenly feel personal empowerment every time he uses, according to the rules of grammar, the masculine form when addressing a sexually heterogeneous group. What had always been the only logical way to speak becomes, due to the violent challenge, a counterattack and a significant personal choice. In an age of weakening affiliation groups and the resulting increase of meaningless in the lives of individuals, turning the status quo into a political party that people are proud to be part of is the fatal own goal of extremism, because it gives people, in a ready-made form, the very thing they yearn for and cannot create on their own.
