Writing exists to bridge a time in which nobody understands you, and to talk to someone who lives in the future and does understand. This means that the part where the writer is pleased at being understood — that part exists, absurdly, only to the reader, far away from the writer who is already gone; and anyone who writes for a future recipient must develop the ability to feel that pleasure in advance, without any proof that it will actually materialize, like when navigating at night in a familiar but completely dark room, and simply knowing where everything is without seeing any of it.
