מיד אחרי פרוץ המלחמה הגדולה התיישבתי לכתוב, בשמי ובשם רוב המכרים שלי, מכתבי תודה נרגשים למנהיגי הצדדים הלוחמים על כך שסיפקו לכולנו, ברוב טובם, נושא בלתי-נדלה לשיחות עם אנשים שאחרת לא היה על מה לדבר איתם.
Immediately following the outbreak of the big war I sat down to write, in my name and on behalf of virtually everyone I knew, heartfelt thank-you letters to the leaders of the belligerent parties, to express my gratitude for their having graciously given us an inexhaustible topic for conversations with people with whom there would otherwise be nothing to talk about.
