A true normative person — one who glows with complete faith in the status quo — is as impressive a phenomenon as a tall mountain, a turbulent sea, or a still forest. To look at him, like looking at them, is to remember that not everything in the world is human; that most things were here before us and will be here after us, and that unlike us, they are not tainted with hesitations, doubts, questions, fears. To look at him is to see Earth without us, in prehistory or in the distant future, absorbed in a celebration of the pure existence of the laws of nature in an endless cycle, protected from any criticism, safe from any change.
