ההימשכות אל הרשת, אם מנסחים אותה במילים ברורות, היא בעצם המחשבה: אני רוצה לדעת מה קורה. על מה "כולם" מדברים, מה מעסיק אותם. להיכנס לרשת בלי סיבה מוגדרת זה תמיד לפעול מאותה סיבה סמויה — עלייה לרגל אל מקום שבו אפשר להיטמע בקהל, להיות אחד מהפרצופים הסבילים שמסתכלים מהצד. לא פחות חשוב הוא שמי שעולה לרגל זונח את דלת אמותיו, את המקום שבו הוא פעיל, שבו הוא לא סתם מתבונן וגם לא מוקד להתבוננות. נטישת מרחב הפעולה של העצמי והמעבר למרחב הפעולה של מישהו אחר — זה הדבר שנותן לזמן ברשת אופי מבוזבז כל כך, אבל הבזבוז הוא לא תופעת לוואי אלא, בעצם, המטרה שלשמה מגיעים.
The attraction to the net, if it is expressed in clear terms, is actually the thought: I want to know what is going on. What "everyone" is talking about, what is on their minds. To go online for no specific reason is always to act out of the same unspoken reason — a pilgrimage to a place where it is possible to blend into the crowd, to be one of the passive faces that look on from the sidelines. No less important is that the pilgrim leaves his private sphere behind, and place where he is active, where he is not merely an onlooker nor an object of scrutiny. The abandonment of oneself's field of action and the relocation to the another's field of action — this is what gives the time spent online such a strong character of waste, but the waste is not a side effect but, in fact, the purpose for which I go there.
