השם יונתן הוא קללה רצינית לכל אמן שנושא אותו. אי אפשר להיות יונתן ולגעת בלב העניין; אפשר רק ללכת לנצח מסביב. לא יודע למה, אולי יש בשם הזה משהו ילדותי מדי, מתנגן מדי. הכרתי פעם יונתן אחד ששינה את שמו וברח לקצה השני של העולם כדי להשתחרר מהקללה הזאת וליצור דברים אמיתיים, אבל הוא נכשל. אף אחד שם לא הכיר אותו ואת שמו הקודם, ובכל זאת הוא נשאר גם שם בדיוק כמו שהיה כאן — עם תהום פעורה, והולכת ומתרחבת, בינו לבין האמת הקשה והמרשימה. וכשהוא חזר הנה בארון, היה לי ברור שהשם המקורי שלו ייכתב על המצבה; השם הזה תמיד אומר את המילה האחרונה, והמילה היא תמיד יונתן.
The name Jonathan is a serious curse on any artist who goes by it. You can't be a Jonathan and touch the heart of the matter; you can only go around it in circles forever. I don't know why, maybe there's something too childish, too melodious about that name. I once knew a Jonathan who changed his name and ran away to the other side of the planet in order to free himself from the curse and create true things, but he failed. Nobody there knew anything about him and his previous name, and yet he remained there just as he had been here — with a gaping, and rapidly widening, chasm between himself and the harsh, impressive truth. And when he came back here in a coffin, it was obvious to me that his original name would be the one written on the headstone; that name always has the final word, and the word is always Jonathan.
