The difficulty of finding meaning in the current way of life — techno-narcissistic culture — is not a personal failure of people who supposedly do not try hard enough, but a fundamental, defining feature of the culture itself. In such conditions, the effort to obtain meaning by brute force is as dangerous as the effort to swim directly back to shore when pulled away from it by a rip current: a waste of energy that plays into the very hands of the thing we are attempting to escape, and is certain to lead us to drown in it.
