אחד הכישלונות הנדירים של אלוהים היה הניסיון לברוא אדם חסר תחליף: מישהו שבלעדיו אנשים לא יוכלו להמשיך בחייהם כרגיל. בהתחלה, שלבי הפרויקט הזה התקדמו בדיוק כמצופה; אותו אדם נגע בכולם, היה נוכח בכל לב, הציף את הזירה הציבורית בגלי ענק של משמעות. אבל אז הגיע רגע האמת, ואיתו תבוסתו של אלוהים בשלב החשוב מכולם — זה שבו הצער הכללי אמור להתמשך ולשנות את העולם, במקום להתפרק לאטומים שנספגים מחדש בזרם הסטטוס קוו ולא נודע כי באו אל קרבו. אם זה לא קרה הפעם זה פשוט לא יכול לקרות, חשב אלוהים, ולא חזר מאז על הניסוי; רק שאת האדם ההוא, אחרי שלקח אותו חזרה אליו, הוא לא השליך מעליו למעמקי השיכחה האפלים אלא אחסן באחד הארונות בקרבתו, ושם הוא שומר עליו עד היום בהישג יד — קצת מתוך תקווה שהתנאים ישתנו בעתיד ויהיה אפשר לנסות שוב, אבל בעיקר מתוך חוסר יכולתו-שלו לחזור לשגרה נורמלית שבה אותו האיש באמת לא קיים עוד.
One of God's rare failures was the attempt to create an irreplaceable person: one without whom people would be unable to go on living normally. At first, the stages of this project went forward as predicted: that person reached every corner of society, was present in every heart, flooded the public agenda with tidal waves of meaning. But then came the moment of truth, and with it, God's defeat at the most important stage — that in which the general sorrow was supposed to remain intact and change the world, instead of disintegrating into atoms that become reabsorbed in the stream of the status quo, never to be seen again. If it didn't happen this time it simply can't happen, thought God, and has not repeated the experiment since. But having taken that person back to Himself, He did not discard him into the dark depths of oblivion but stored him in a nearby closet where He has kept him within easy reach to this very day — somewhat out of the faint hope that the conditions will change in the future and it will be possible to try again, but mostly out of His own inability to fully resume a normal routine in which that person truly no longer exists.
