שני סוגי השירים היפניים בעלי 5-7-5 הברות — הייקו וסֵנְריוּ — אמנם צמחו מתוך שירת ווָאקַה/טָנְקַה, שבה המבנה הוא 5-7-5-7-7 הברות, ויש להם מאפיינים צורניים ונושאיים משותפים רבים עם תחום השירה. אבל ברוחם, הייקו וסנריו הם לא שירה, אלא ניגודה ושלילתה המוחלטים (וזו הסיבה שאני אוהב אותם על אף עוינותי הכללית לשירה אמיתית). העיקרון הבסיסי של שירה הוא הזלזול במציאות: כביכול היא לא מספיק יפה, מעניינת, או בעלת משמעות כפי שהיא, ולכן צריך להלביש אותה במילים ובמקצב שתופר לה המשורר, ואז לראשונה יש לפנינו משהו שראוי להסתכל עליו ולהעריך אותו. המשורר מתפקד על תקן כוהן דת, שבלי תיווכו אין לשאר האנשים תקווה להתקרב לאל. אבל המטרה של שבע-עשרה ההברות הפוכה: לסלק מהדרך את הבגדים המצועצעים שבני אדם הלבישו על המציאות, ולחשוף את העובדה שהשיר האמיתי והיחיד נמצא שם, בעולם, ולא כאן על הדף — ופתוח לכולם בלי תיווך כלשהו, לא של אנשים ואפילו לא של מילים. שירה היא הפניית עורף יהירה לאמת, בעוד שבע-עשרה ההברות היפניות הן, במיטבן, הפניית עורף צנועה להפניית העורף.

Both types of seventeen-syllable Japanese poetry — haiku and senryu — indeed grew out of waka/tanka poetry, where the syllable structure is 5-7-5-7-7, and share many formal and thematic characteristics with the poetic field. However, in spirit, haiku and senryu are not poetry but its total negation and antithesis (which is why I like them despite being generally hostile toward genuine poetry). The basic principle of poetry is the disdain of reality: supposedly reality is not beautiful, interesting, or meaningful enough as it is, and must therefore be clothed in the words and rhythm of the poet; only then can we see something that is worth looking at and appreciating. The poet functions as a priest, without whose mediation no other person has hope of approaching God. But the purpose of the seventeen syllables is diametrically opposed: to remove the fancy clothes that humans have put on reality, and reveal the fact that the only real poem is out there, in the world, and not here on the page — and is open to everyone without any kind of mediation, neither of persons nor even of words. Poetry is an arrogant turning of one's back on reality, whereas the seventeen syllables are a modest turning of one's back on the act of turning the back.
