Boredom is a situation where the fuel runs out in the vehicle of human experience, and it must stop at a random spot on the road that is our life. In that case we must admit that the car will not start, get out of it, and start walking — that is, be thrown out from our ordinary experience into a broader world, which we have grown accustomed to seeing as empty, hostile and meaningless without the human dimension, but now appears to look back at us as though we were something totally unnecessary within it. This is probably why boredom is more scary and intolerable than any other feeling, and makes most of us suddenly discover nearly superhuman powers within ourselves as we rush to push the car toward the nearest gas station.
