גן עדן וגיהנום הם לא שני מקומות מנוגדים, מלאים בהתרחשויות טובות או רעות — אלא אותו מקום עצמו, עולם מת ואינרטי שבו לא קורה כלום אף פעם. מי שנשלח ל"גיהנום" הוא בסך הכל זה שמשאירים אצלו את היכולת להשתעמם, ומי שנשלח ל"גן עדן" הוא זה שחוש השעמום נעקר ממנו; והרבה מייאושו המוצדק של הראשון נגרם ישירות על ידי תחושת ההתעלות חסרת-הבסיס של האחרון.
Heaven and hell are not two antithetical places, full of good or bad events—but the very same place, a dead, inert world where nothing ever happens. A person sent to "hell" is simply one whose ability to feel boredom is left intact, whereas a person sent to "heaven" is one who sense of boredom has been ripped out of his mind; and much of the sensible despair of the former is directly caused by the baseless elation of the latter.
