נראה שתקווה אינה דבר אהוב על אלוהים, בהתחשב בתדירות שבה הוא מנפץ אותה. למה היא לא אהובה עליו? אולי כי היא מסיטה את תשומת לבו של המקווה ממה שאלוהים נותן עכשיו אל מה שמצופה ממנו לתת בעתיד. המתנה האמיתית של אלוהים — הרגע הזה, שבאנגלית נקרא, באופן הולם, present — נהרסת על ידי התקווה, ולכן, כשהתקווה עצמה נהרסת, חוזרים לנקודת ההתחלה. ניפוץ התקווה הוא מעשה של נדיבות חסרת-רחמים: נתינה חוזרת של המתנה שנדחתה — והפעם באופן נוקשה יותר, מכאיב יותר, כך שלא ניתן יהיה להתעלם ממנה שוב.

Hope does not seem to be one of God's favorite things, considering how often he shatters it. Why does it displease him? Perhaps because it diverts the attention of the hoping person away from what God is giving now and toward what he is expected to give in the future. God's real gift — the current moment, very aptly called "the present" — is destroyed by hope, and therefore, when hope itself is destroyed, status quo ante is restored and we go back to square one. The shattering of hope is an act of ruthless benevolence: a re-giving of the rejected gift, this time more starkly, more painfully, so that it cannot be ignored again.
