אנשים נורמליים לא קיימים בעולם. מה שקיים, ובכמויות אדירות, הוא אנשים נורמטיביים — כלומר כאלה שרוצים בכל מאודם להיות נורמליים, ועוד יותר מכך, רוצים שאלה שסביבם יהיו כאלה. אדם נורמלי הוא סוג של נס בלתי אפשרי, שווה-ערך למי שראה את אלוהים ונשאר בחיים. לעומת זאת, אדם נורמטיבי הוא היסוד הנפוץ ביותר בטבע האנושי — שווה-ערך למי שמאמין באלוהים בלי לראות אותו אף פעם, רק כי הוא שמע עליו דברים טובים (או מפחידים) מאנשים אחרים.
Normal people do not exist in the world. What does exist, and in huge quantities, is normative people — those who earnestly want to be normal, and even more than that, want those around them to be normal. A normal person is a kind of impossible miracle, the equivalent of someone who has seen God and remained alive; on the other hand, a normative person is the most common element in human nature — the equivalent of someone who believes in God without ever seeing him, based entirely on hearing good (or scary) things about him from other people.
