לא ככה היא אמורה היתה להיראות, כניסת השבת. הכוונה המקורית לא היתה שאנשים סתם ינוחו ביום השביעי, אלא שכולם ימותו בתחילתו ויקומו לתחייה בסופו. רק ככה אפשר היה לשחזר בצורה משכנעת מספיק את השלווה המוחלטת שנפלה על העולם כשהבורא חדל ממלאכתו, ואת התפארת הבלתי-נתפסת של חזרתו לפעילות בתחילת השבוע השני. אבל במציאות התברר שמחזור ההמתות וההחייאות השבועי הוא מעל לכוחותיהם הגופניים והנפשיים של בני האדם, והפרקטיקה הזאת נזנחה במהרה כדי לאפשר להם לנוח במידה המוגבלת שלה הם היו מסוגלים. ככה זה נמשך עד שהגיע המשיח, שתפקידו הידוע היה לחולל את תחיית המתים, ותפקידו הפחות ידוע היה לחולל את המתת החיים. אבל לרוע המזל הוא הגיע באמצע השבוע, כך שההמתה הכללית היתה הראשונה ברשימת הפעולות שהיה עליו לבצע; וביום שישי בערב, כשהוא הרים את ידו כדי להרוג זמנית את האנושות, הוא לא לקח בחשבון שגם הוא, בעצם, רק אדם — ולא יישאר מי שירים שוב את היד כדי להחזיר את המצב לקדמותו.

This was not how it was supposed to be, the beginning of the Sabbath. The original intention was not for people to merely rest on the seventh day, but for everyone to die at its beginning and come back to life at its end. That was the only way to plausibly recreate the utter stillness that overtook the world when the creator had ceased his work, and the unspeakable splendor of his resumption of activity at the beginning of the second week. But in practice, it turned out that the weekly cycle of demise and revival is beyond the physical and mental powers of humans, and the practice was soon abandoned in favor of allowing them the limited rest they were capable of. That was how things went on until the coming of the Messiah, whose well-known role was to bring about the rising of the dead, and whose less public role was to bring about the downfall of the living. Unfortunately, however, he arrived in the middle of the week, so that the wholesale extinction was first on his list of things to do; and on Friday night, when he raised his hand to temporarily kill humanity, he did not realize that he, too, was in fact only human — and there would be nobody left to raise that hand again to make things go back to normal.
