תפקידה של אמנות הוא להגיע אל חומות הכלא האנושי ולפרוץ אותן, כך שנוצר חור שגודלו מאפשר לפחות לראות מה יש מעבר להן, ובשאיפה, גם לעבור דרכו החוצה. אבל כמעט כל האמנות הקיימת בפועל מסתכמת בסתם ביטוי וחגיגה של כישרון יצירתי — שהוא כשלעצמו דבר שנמצא כולו בתחומי הכלא. בתור שכזו, במקום לשחרר את האסירים, היא רק עוזרת להנציח את צרתם בכך שהיא מנעימה עליהם את השהייה מאחורי הסורגים.
The role of art is to reach the walls of the human prison and break through them, making a hole whose size makes it possible at least to see what is beyond them, and hopefully, to crawl outside as well. But nearly all actually existing art amounts to nothing more than an expression and celebration of creative talent — something which, in itself, exists entirely within the confines of the prison. As such, instead of the setting the prisoners free, it only helps to perpetuate their predicament by making their stay behind bars more pleasant.
