אחרי ערב שלם של מריחת זמן ובניית מתח מייגעת הגיע סוף סוף הרגע הגדול: הווילון האדום נפתח והגרדום נגלה לעינינו במלוא תפארתו. אבל היחיד שעמד שם היה התליין, ולולאת החבל התנודדה ריקה. נהמת תסכול עלתה בבת אחת מכל אגפי הקהל, ואנשים התחילו לצעוק בוז, לשרוק, ולהניף אגרופים באוויר. בשורה השנייה קם שמן אחד עם עניבת פרפר וצעק על התליין בליווי תנועות ידיים נזעמות: כולם פה קנו כרטיסים ממיטב כספם, התלבשו יפה, עמדו בפקקים בדרך הנה, ואז סבלו בנימוס כמעט שעתיים עד שתגיעו לעיקר. ועכשיו זה? ככה אתם יורקים לנו בפרצוף? איך אתם מעזים להעלות את התוכנית הזאת אם לא מצאתם את מי להוציא להורג הערב? כשהאיש גמר לדבר, התליין צחק והמצנפת השחורה רקדה על ראשו. בוודאי שמצאנו, הוא אמר. מצאנו אתכם. אנחנו מוציאים להורג את הזמן הפנוי שלכם; והרי רק בשביל זה הגעתם אלינו.
After an entire evening of excruciating dawdling and buildup of tension the big moment finally came: the red curtain swept open and revealed the scaffold in all its glory. But the only one who stood there was the hangman, and the noose was dangling empty. A growl of frustration rose from all parts of the audience, and people started booing, whistling, and raising fists in the air. In the second row a bow-tied fat guy stood up and shouted at the hangman while gesturing angrily with his hands: Everyone here paid a lot of money for their tickets, dressed up, got stuck in rush-hour traffic, and then suffered quietly for almost two hours waiting for you to get to the point. And now you spit in our faces so outrageously? How dare you go ahead with the program if you couldn't find anyone to execute tonight? When the man finished talking the hangman laughed, and his black hood danced on his head. Of course we found someone, he said. We found all of you. We are executing your spare time; this is, after all, the only thing you came to us for.
