קנאה היא טיפשית לא בגלל העליבות והקטנוניות שלה (היא רחוקה מלהיות הרגש העלוב והקטנוני היחיד שלנו) אלא בגלל האבסורדיות שבהפנייתה אל אנשים אחרים — כלומר, אל מי שנמצא למעשה באותה בעיה קיומית בסיסית של המקנא. אדם שמקנא באדם הוא כמו נוסע שלכוד על ספינה טובעת ומקנא בנוסע אחר שלכוד על אותה ספינה, רק כי הוא לכוד בחדר מפואר יותר; אבל האבסורד הזה היה נעלם בבת אחת אם הוא פשוט היה מקנא בדגים שמחוץ לספינה.
Envy is silly not because of its pettiness (it is hardly our only petty emotion) but because of the absurdity of directing it at other people — that is, at someone who shares the fundamental existential problem of the envier. A person envying a person is like a passenger trapped on a sinking ship who envies another passenger trapped on the same ship, just because that other passenger happens to be trapped in a fancier room; but this absurdity would vanish right away if the envy were turned to the fish outside the ship.
