ימין ושמאל הם לא עמדות פוליטיות אלא דבר רחב בהרבה — עמדות תודעתיות וקיומיות שמקבלות ביטוי בכל אגפי החיים ובתוכם גם בפוליטיקה. הבדל בסיסי חשוב בין השניים הוא שהימין מפחד יותר מכל מהאחר, בעוד השמאל מפחד יותר מכל מהעצמי. הימין מפחד ממה שהוא רואה בחלון, השמאל מפחד ממה שהוא רואה בראי. ובאמת, הרגש הימני הטיפוסי הוא הכעס (אלימות שמופנית החוצה) בעוד הרגש השמאלי הטיפוסי הוא הדיכאון (אלימות שמופנית פנימה). הימני זורק מהמחנה את מי שלא חושב כמוהו (נקנה לכם כרטיס טיסה בכיוון אחד לברלין); השמאלן פורש מהמחנה בהפגנתיות ומקים עוד ועוד רסיסי-מחנות בחיפוש תמידי אחר טוהר אידילי (נעזוב את הארץ ונעבור דווקא לברלין, ואז, כשהיא תאכזב, נעזוב גם אותה). וכך הלאה. לא סתם הבודהיזם אהוד על חוגים רחבים בשמאל בכל העולם: הכחשת קיומו של האני, וה"תרגול" הבלתי-פוסק כדי לנטרל את "אשליית" הקיום הזה, הם בדיוק השאיפה החבויה בתשתית הנפשית השמאלית. ותמונת הנגטיב היא הרעיון הימני באופיו, לפיו קיימת בכורה אלוהית שניתנת אך ורק לקבוצה מסוימת ולכל מי שמשתייך אליה.

Right and left are not political positions but something much broader—mental and existential positions that find their expression in all parts of life, including politics. A fundamental difference between the two is that above all else the right fears the other, while the left fears the self. The right is afraid of what it sees in the window, the left is afraid of what it sees in the mirror. Indeed, the typical right-wing emotion is anger (violence turned outward) whereas the typical left-wing emotion is depression (violence turned inward). The right-winger throws out of the group anyone who thinks differently (we'll buy you a one-way ticket to Berlin); the left-winger dramatically leaves the group, founding new tiny groups in a perpetual search for idyllic purity (we'll emigrate to Berlin, of all places, and then, when that proves a disappointment, we'll leave it too). And so on. It is for a good reason that Buddhism has such a widespread positive status among leftist circles all over the world: the denial of the self's existence, and the ceaseless "practice" to neutralize the "illusion" of that existence, are precisely the aspiration hidden in the leftist psychological foundation. And the opposite is the idea, compatible with the right-wing character, of a primacy exclusively given by God to a particular group and everyone who belongs to it.
