כל הצלחה, מכל סוג ובכל תחום, מחייבת תשלום לשטן. התשלום יכול להיות במזומן — לפני או בתחילת ההצלחה; או באשראי — בשיא ההצלחה או הרבה אחרי שהיא דעכה. המטבע היחיד שבו גובה השטן את התשלום המגיע לו נקרא סבל. לא סתם עבודה קשה, לא סתם מאמץ — אלא סבל אמיתי, כמו שרק השטן יודע לברוא. אם נדמה לך שאתה מצליח, אבל ידוע לך שלא סבלת בדרך לשם, יש רק שתי אפשרויות: או שאתה, במובן עמוק כלשהו, לא באמת מצליח; או ששילמת באשראי, והריבית ממשיכה להצטבר במחשכים, עד היום שבו היא תופיע משום מקום כגל ענק שיטביע אותך.
Any success, of any kind and in every walk of life, requires payment to the Devil. This payment may be made in cash — before or at the beginning of success; or by credit — at the height of success or long after it fades. The sole currency in which the Devil collects the payment due to him is called suffering. Not merely hard work, not merely effort — but actual suffering, of the kind only the Devil knows how to create. If you believe you are successful, but you know you have not suffered on the way there, there are only two possibilities: either you are, in some deep sense, not truly successful; or you have paid by credit, and the interest continues to accumulate in the dark, until the day when it appears out of nowhere as a gigantic wave and drowns you.
