יש שתי דרכים לשלוט בעבד: לענות אותו או לענג אותו. משעבדים טיפשים בוחרים בדרך הראשונה, ובכך גורמים לעבד להבין שהוא עבד; משעבדים חכמים בוחרים בדרך השנייה, ובכך גורמים לעבד להתאהב בעבדותו. עבד חכם יעדיף את המשעבד הטיפש, למרות הסבל שהוא גורם לו; אבל העבד הכי חכם יעדיף דווקא את המשעבד החכם ואת האתגר הקיצוני של ההתמודדות מולו — כי רק מי שמצליח להשתחרר מעבדות אהובה יכול לקרוא לעצמו אדם חופשי באמת.
There are two ways to control a slave: to cause him pain or to give him pleasure. Foolish enslavers choose the first way, thereby making the slave realize he is a slave; wise enslavers choose the second way, thereby making the slave fall in love with his own enslavement. A wise slave prefers the foolish enslaver, despite the suffering he inflicts on him; but the wisest slave actually prefers the wise enslaver and the extreme challenge of facing him — because only the one who manages to break free from a loved enslavement can call himself a truly free man.
