In the attention economy, every person holds in his hands the doomsday weapon that can destroy the whole system: the act of ignoring. But this weapon is only used absentmindedly, and almost never deliberately, because nothing is more threatening to a person who lives in such an economy than legitimizing the possibility that he himself would be ignored too.
