The only thing that can kill literature as a meaningful activity is its artificial transformation from an inherently individual art form into a collective art form, like film, theater, or most of music—that is, one in which there is no possibility of communication between one individual and another, except in the context of a certain affiliation group that controls the technical, mental, or interpretational aspects of creation. Notable expressions of such a trend are writing workshops; literary competitions; the power and ego maneuvers behind the scenes of journals; and the audience-generated content that surrounds books in online stores.
